I'm a painter - of pictures, not fences.
People invariably ask me, "what do I paint?" For years I tried to explain all the different media and subjects I have painted.
Then it occurred to me that what I have really done is develop a method and manner of making marks with paint. Thinking, feeling and a practice of doing.
The subject matter is just a vehicle for the metaphor, joke or narrative embodied by the piece.
Oh, I have some favorite subjects: big mountains, brookie creeks, flowers, butterflies and naked women. Since Covid I have been working on hybrid abstract and emotive action paintings.
They offer lots of opportunity for dramatic or subtle narrative.
But it is the painting that matters most. As in applying the paint.
It is not that I want to paint, but that I must. And it's fun.
